HOW TO PLAY: CORE SKILLS

Dodgeball is an exhilarating team sport that demands a combination of physical prowess, strategy, and quick reflexes. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, honing these core skills will significantly enhance your performance on the court.

1. Dodging

Dodging is the heart of dodgeball. To avoid getting hit, practice swift movements—dip, duck, dive, and dodge! Keep an eye on the opponent’s throws and position yourself strategically.

  • Remember, teamwork is crucial; avoid standing behind teammates to maintain visibility and avoid standing in front of teammates so they can see the ball!

  • GO BIG! MAKE SMALL! - Dodge using big movements or by making yourself as small a target as possible.

2. Catching

Catching is a game-changer. CATCHES WIN MATCHES. When a ball comes your way, focus on catching it with your hands, not just your fingertips. Not only will you be more likely to make the catch you will avoid injury!

  • Plant your self in front of the path of the throw - so the ball is heading towards the middle of your body. Then you can use your chest as a backboard to try and gain control of the ball.

  • Scoop the ball into your chest with your hands to ensure you don't drop it.

3. Throwing

Offensive play hinges on throwing accuracy. Pay attention to where you aim—lower body or feet— as these throws are the most difficult to catch. Experiment with different grips to find what feels comfortable.

4. Blocking

Blocking is a defensive gem. If catching isn’t an option, block incoming throws with a ball. Timing and precision matter here.

  • It's safest to block down and to the side - as a live blocked ball can still knock out your teammates if blocked into them!

  • A solid grip when blocking ensures you retain control to deflect incoming shots upward, making them easier to catch.

5. Team Coordination

Teamwork wins games. Coordinate with teammates to time your throws, plan offensive counters, and execute defensive retreats. Communication is key, especially when redistributing balls among players.

  • Make sure the team knows how many balls you have - especially if the team only has one!

  • Make sure that everyone comes together and knows who is attacking and who they are attacking.

6. Countering

Be alert for opportunities to counter. Observe distracted or unprepared opponents. Faking a throw can confuse them. Gather balls thrown at you to mount a full counter against the other team.

  • A defensive/standing counter or "pre-throw" can be used to disrupt an attack.

  • A running/attacking counter can be used to try and eliminate opponents as they retreat.

7. Awareness

Stay aware of your position on the court. Avoid going out of bounds while dodging or throwing. Understand the game flow and adapt accordingly.

  • Know where your teammates are and give them space!

  • Don't bunch up together and make yourself a group target.

  • DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON YOUR OPPONENTS.

8. Composure

Maintain composure under pressure. Dodgeball can be intense, but staying calm helps you make better decisions and execute skills effectively.

  • Don't get caught in a loop of always throwing singles just because you have the ball.

  • Come together as a team and use the playball time to work out what you need to do. Ten seconds is a longer time than it sounds like on the court!

Remember, mastering these skills takes practice, teamwork, and dedication. So grab a ball, hit the court, and become a GIANT!
