HOW TO PLAY: CATCHING

Catches win matches! If you learn how to reliably catch dodgeballs during a game you will become an absolutely key player for your team.

A catch not only gets one of the other team out but allows one of your teammates to re-enter the game! Catches can change the course and results of games in seconds.

Be ready to catch every ball. Track where opponents are and be ready for them to throw at you. Not every ball is catchable but you should always be prepeared for the ones that are.

Avoid trying to catch balls that are out of reach. Even though you should always be on the lookout for balls you can catch, don’t catch balls that you think you might drop.

You have two catching zones around you - an inner and an outer - the inner usually ranges from your waist to your shoulders and is where you can comfortable scoop a ball into your chest to secure it.

The outer zone is the area around you where you can comfortably reach to catch a ball. Imagine a box around you that is roughly your arms length (but probably a little less - to be safe!)

If the ball is outwith that box it’s probably riskier to go for the catch than it is to leave it.

BONUS THROWING TIP You can also try and trick other players into overextending for catches by throwing at the edges of where you think their box is.

Catch the ball with both hands. This makes the ball easier to secure and means you are less likely to risk staved fingers!

  • Follow the trajectory of the ball coming towards you - if multiple balls are coming towards you make a quick decision about which one seems the most catchable and focus on that one.

  • Plant your feet behind and face the ball with your arms forming a basket or cone shape (depending on which feels most natural for you)

  • When the ball enters into the zone of your basket or cone pull you arms up to cradle the ball into your chest and secure it.

The ideal catch is one where you have planted your feet in line with the throws trajectory and are prepared to “scoop” the catch into your chest. Cradle the ball to secure the catch and ensure you don't drop the ball to get eliminated.

Think about what else is happening on court when you go for a catch. If your team is up on players you probably don't need to go for every ball. But if you are behind it might just be worth the risk!

If you are the only one on court - you pretty much have to go for every catchable ball.

If you can become a good catcher - then you can become a giant!
