12 SPORTS THAT CAN PREPARE YOU FOR DODGEBALL

Beginners are more than welcome as we are a new adult club and we want to grow our sport. Any age, fitness or ability level, is welcome.


A number of sports have similar skillsets to dodgeball, so if you've played any of the below you might have a heads up!


  1. FOOTBALL Decision making, awareness, and agility are key skills that football players have that translate to dodgeball. They are accustomed to tracking moving objects (the ball) and making split-second decisions (shoot, pass, tackle, and so on). These abilities are valuable when reacting to dodgeball throws. Soccer players can also adapt their agility and balance for dodging.

  2. RUGBY: Rugby players excel in quick lateral movements, evading opponents, and changing direction rapidly. These skills directly apply to dodging in dodgeball. Rugby backs will be sidestepping and weaving to avoid incoming balls in no time and forwards can use their explosive power in the scrum for strong throws.

  3. TENNIS: Agility and quick lateral movements are essential in both tennis and dodgeball. Tennis players can use their footwork and anticipation skills to dodge incoming balls effectively. Being able to focus on a small target and position yourself precisely where you need to be is a skill that translates well to dodgeball.

  4. BASKETBALL: Basketball players develop excellent hand-eye coordination, especially when dribbling and passing. These skills can help dodgeball players catch and throw accurately. Basketball also emphasizes teamwork and communication, which are vital in dodgeball.

  5. VOLLEYBALL/NETBALL: Volleyball and Netball players often practice quick reactions and hand-eye coordination. These skills translate well to catching and throwing in dodgeball. Additionally, volleyball and Netball players are used to working in a team, which is crucial in dodgeball.

  6. BASKETBALL: Basketball players develop excellent hand-eye coordination, especially when dribbling and passing. These skills can help dodgeball players catch and throw accurately. Basketball also emphasizes teamwork and communication, which are vital in dodgeball.

  7. BASEBALL/CRICKET: Catching skills from baseball or cricket directly apply to dodgeball. The ability to judge the trajectory of a ball and position oneself for a catch is crucial. Baseball and Cricket players can also use their throwing techniques for accurate throws in dodgeball.

  8. ATHLETICS (SPRINTING): Sprinters develop explosive speed and quick bursts of energy. In dodgeball, sprinting helps players quickly reach balls at the start of a match or evade opponents during intense moments.

  9. GYMNASTICS: Gymnasts have exceptional body control, balance, and spatial awareness. These skills aid in dodging and manoeuvring around the court. Additionally, gymnasts are used to performing under pressure, which is valuable in dodgeball tournaments.

  10. WRESTLING: Wrestling teaches balance, leverage, and body positioning. These skills can help dodgeball players maintain stability while dodging or catching. Wrestlers also understand the importance of strategy and tactics.

  11. MARTIAL ARTS: Martial artists learn discipline, focus, and timing. These attributes contribute to better dodging and catching in dodgeball. Martial arts practitioners also understand how to read opponents’ movements.

  12. ULTIMATE FRISBEE: Ultimate frisbee players share similarities with dodgeball players in terms of quick throws, catching, and teamwork. The ability to predict opponents’ actions and react swiftly is valuable in both sports.
